FILM STAR SANJAY KAPOOR IN FILM CITY

The star of box office super hit ‘Sirf Tum’ Sanjay Kapoor was the chief guest of the function held at the Marwah Studios Complex in the film city to inaugurate the silver session of the Asian Academy of film & Television. Welcoming the film star, Director of the academy Prof. Sandeep Marwah mentioned that the academy has been successfully conducting training in the art & Craft of film making & television production for the last six years and it has been widely acclaimed as the best alternative to the formal film and television schools. A mention was made also of the fact that the pioneering work done by the academy has been commended by All India Achievers Conference. This organisaiton has chosen Prof. Sandeep Marwah for the Achievers of the Millenium award for his significant contribution to the field of film & television training and for emerging as a role model worthy of emulation by others. The other receipient of this award are noted film star Devanand, popular film & television artiste Shekhar Suman, film director Sanjay Khan, former Miss Femina Manpreet Brar, former supercop KPS Gill, famous cricketer Kapil Dev and deputy speaker of Lok Sabha P.M. Sayeed. Addressing the trainees of the silver batch of Asian Academy of Film & Television, Sanjay Kapoor said that hardwork and dedication are the key to success in all areas of filmmaking. He said that systematic training helps develop skills and the necessary self-confidence. He advised the film professionals including the artistes to behave like a normal person and to lead the life like a common-man. He advised the trainees never to feel diffident if success does not come their way and continue to strive for achieving success in their work. He mentioned that successful artistes like Devanand and Raj Kapoor were sources of inspiration to him. Replying to a question he said that film industry is not a big-bad world and it is a wonderful outlet for the creative people. Present on this occasion were stage artiste Sanjay Malik, Bhushan Kandhari of Punjabi Kala Sangam, lyricist Sudhakar Sharmaa and the veteran media personality Om Prakash Katyal.
Achievers of the Millennium Awards Shekhar Suman and Sandeep Marwah

Television artiste Shekhar Suman of the popular ‘Movers & Shakers’ show and Prof. Sandeep Marwah Director of Asian Academy of Film & Television were honoured with the Achievers of the Millennium award by the Honourable Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Mr. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in a glittering function held in the capital. Among the other distinguished personalities on the dais were Honourable Minister for Labour Dr. Satya Narayan Jatiya and Minister of State for Steel & Mines Mr. Ramesh Bais. All India Achievers Conference has been honouring selected few for their notable services to the society and excellence in their chosen field of activity for the last, ten years. This years other award winners include Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha P.M. Sayeed, Former Director General of Police K.P.S. Gill, Bharat Natyam exponent Geeta Chandran, Fashion-Designer Ritu Beri and former Femina Miss India Manpreet Brar. Prof. Sandeep Marwah has been chosen for this award in recognition of this outstanding and pioneering work in the field of film and television education and training. Congratulating the award winners, Mr. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi called upon every citizen to work hard to build a truly great Indian nation at the dawn of the new millennium. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Jatiya said that staring point for the great achiever is faith in himself and that nothing is impossible for a willing mind. He was of the view that well meaning and talented persons should be given necessary support and encouragement in their work for welfare of the society.
SUBAH SAVERE COMPLETES ONE YEAR

Subah Savere, the longest duration program on Doordarshan’s national network, completed one year recently. Themakers decided to add attraction to the programme, which they did by having Sandeep Marwah, director of Marwah Studio and Asian Academy of Film and Television; as the male anchor in addition to the host Mona Bhattacharya. EVERGREEN HERO OF INDIAN SILVER SCREEN DEV ANAND BLESSES THE SILVER BATCH OF ASIAN ACADEMY OF FILM & TELEVISION

The living legend of Hindi films Dev Anandwas recently at Marwah Studios, Noida. This was the first ever visit of the great movie-star to the Noida, Film City. Dev Anand is in acting & film-making for the last fifty years. He has the uncanny knack of spotting and making actresses. Dev Anand’s films are great hits at the box-office. His latest film CENSOR is shortly due for release. Dev Anand said that he ws greatly fascinated by the lush green and serene facility at the Film City. The great showman and the recipient of Achievers of the Millennium Award Dev Anand accepted the invitation of the Director of Asian Academy of Film & Television (AAFT) Prof. Sandeep Marwah who also was the recipient of the same award last month, to visit the academy. Incidentally, it was a rare coincidence that the recipients of the prestigious Achievers of the Millennium award were together. Dev Anand took keen interest in the training facility for the actors and others at the academy. Blessing the students of the silver batch he wished all the best to the Director in the pioneering workbeing doen by his team in the field of media education and training. Director of the Star TV’s popular serial ‘Star-trek’, Ms. Saloni was also present on this occasion. Later, Dev Anand recorded his interview on the floors of Marwah Studios.
GOOD PERFORMING ARTISTE NEED NOT SHED CLOTHES

The noted film producer-director-lyricist Sawan Kumar Tak decried the current trend of exploiting the female anatomy in filmmaking. Sawan Kumar Tak has been making box office hits on woman oriented subjects was frank enough to state that love stories are evergreen subject for the films. He was of the view that many facetted character of woman provides unlimited themes for films. Explaining to the students of AAFT that the awareness level of the present day viewers is very high and they can not be taken for granted by the filmmakers. He said that the piracy of films by the cable television operators is a matter of greater worry than the dubbling of Hollywod films to the film producers. He was of the view thatdiverse taste of the vast Indian population compels the filmmaker to add various elements including song and dance sequences which makes the film lengthy. In reply to the question of the AAFT’s students he commenting on the MTV music anddance programme producers are one overusing the film cutting techniques and that such productions should not be compared with the picturisation of songs in the Indian films. Sawan Kumar Tak advocated narrow specialisation in the field of film making and felt that the actors taking to film direction tend to men up the production. He admitted that technology has affected the films. Sawan Kumar who has been into films for over thirty years and has made dozens of popular films, is credited with giving the break to stars like Sanjeev Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Neetu Singh and Padmini Kolhapure etc. Addressing the students of silver jubilee batch of Asian Academy of Film & Television (AAFT), he mentioned that systematic education and training for filmmaking and television programming is a must. He was greatly impressed by the training facility at the academy and remarked that this academy is even a shade better than Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. Sawan Kumar Tak also agreed to be the member of the governing council of Asian Academy of Film & Television.
ANIL KAPOOR’S VISIT TURNS INTO A GRAND GALA AT ASIAN ACADEMY OF FILM & TELEVISION

Popular superstar Anil Kapoor was recently at Asian Academy of Film & Television, Noida, to meet the students of its memorable silver batch on the conclusion of their training. Addressing the students Anil Kapoor said that films are a complex and costly art-form and the film makers including the actors have to understand the heart and the mind of the people in order to make responsive and responsible movies. Striking a note of caution, the superstar added that over the years the level of awareness of an average Indian film goer has gone up and he can’t be taken for granted. He said that filmic appeal is universal. But, it is a pity that the addition of sound track to the movie has resulted in the fragmentation of the audience on the linguistic basis. Briefing the superstar, about the courseware and the training methodology, Prof. Sandeep Marwah, Director informed him that the academy attracts students from developing as well as well as developed countries. A workshop on acting was recently organised for the British nationals. Anil Kapoor endorsed the integrated approach to training and remarked that AAFT has indeed become the best film & television school in the country. Prof. Sandeep Marwah took this opportunity to acknowledge the sincerity and devotion of large number of film & television professionals who have been helping him in providing education and training to the aspirants of a career in this industry. The superstar disclosed to the students, who were swept off their feet by his charm, grace, warmth and sincerity that his latest film ‘Pukar’ is due for release in February 2000.
DUTY HAS TO BE PART AND PARCEL OF RELIGION - SAYS PREM SAGAR

Addressing the student of the Asian Academy of Film & Television, the renowned producer/director Prem Sagar said that Karma has to be a part of dharma. Feeling at home in the company of the students this distinguished film and television personality said that his illustrious father Ramanand Sagar asked him in 1968 to join Film & Television Institute of India because this premier film school was keen to associate itself with their renowned production house. He mentioned that by sheer dint of hard work and a bit of good luck he holds enviable and unbroken record of being awarded both the gold & the silver medal of the institute. Answering the questions from the students, Prem Sagar said that the realisation of the power and the great reach of the television to communicate with the masses had motivated his company to produce mega TV serials like Ramayana, Krishna & Jai ganga Maiya. He said their target audience is not a religious group but the entaire mankind. In a passing reference to the films he said that films are a commercial art and are always bogged down by uncertainty which is a constant source of worry to the producer. Commending the work being done in the field of film & television training by Prof. Sandeep Marwah and his team, he advised the students to carefully observe the objects and event around them for creating meaningful and purposeful television programmes and films. Subhash Sagar who was accompanying Prem Sagar also spoke on this occasion. Both of them agreed to be the member of the governing council of Asian Academy of Film & Television.
TELEVISION SHOULD HELP SHAPE PEOPLES LIVES

Addressing the students of the twenty-sixth session of Asian Academy of Film & Television, well known intellectual and former Director General Doordarshan Madhukar Lele said that mass media is known to shape thought, change attitudes and move people to action and its potentials to facilitate development or damaging the society is enormous. Conceding that the technological advances have made the television production equipment versatile and user friendly, he said their creative use is indeed challenging. He was of the opinion that the value-system in the Indian society have changed for the worse in the last decade due to the evil influence of television. He forcefully stated that television must be used for the public good. Feeling nostalgic about the positive role of mass media he mentioned that it is All India Radio which gave the classical music its place of pride. Pointing out that knowledge is limitless, he asked the students to continuously strive for acquiring skills in their chosen field of creative work. Answering the questions from the students Prof. Sandeep Marwah explained the role of media in man’s life. Commending the work being done in the field of media education and training by Prof. Sandeep Marwah, the renowned journalist Madhavkante Mishra told the students that education and training helps in leading one from darkness to light and that practical experience in the field makes one perfect. Speaking with emotion, Madhavkante Mishra lamented that commercialisation of mass media has led to unfair competition as well as degeneration of the moral standards in the society. He asked the students to try and bring glory to their alma mater by their professional work.
COMMERCIALISATION IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF DECLINE OF THE STANDARD OF HINDI FILMS : SAYS OM PURI

Talking informally to the students of Asian Academy of Film & Television, Film City, popular film actor Om Puri said that 1950-1970 can be described as the golden era of Hindi films because the film producers respected talented and creative artistes. Thereafter, the filmmaking slipped into the hands of people who are merely interested in making the fast buck. Another reasons for the decline of quality of Hindi film is the lack of direction from the policy makers and the national leaders. He said that whereas the commercial aspect of filmmaking is important, creativity should not be relegated to the back seat. He said that demand from the viewers alone will compel the producers to make good films. He admitted that the themes of most of present day Hindi films are frivolous and flippant. Conceding that entertainment is the integral part of life, he said that nothing should be done in the name entertainment to hurt the sentiments of an individual or a section of the society. He said that films should not be blamed for the evils prevailing in the society. Ranking Anil Kapoor and Aamir Khan amongst the best actors of the decade he said that hard work is the secret of success of these talented artistes. Om Puri disclosed that Pukar, Bollywood calling Hera-Pheru, Guru-Mahaguru are amongst some of the films in which he is currently acting. Later discussing the course conducted at the academy with Director AAFT Prof. Sandeep Marwah, the actor desired that the producer/director should be told that the script is all important in the production of films & television programming and that they must learn script writing work very well.
Malaysian Film Actress in Noida Film City

Charming and talented maker of contemporary Malay films Erma Fatima who has brought her path-breaking film “The Last Malay Woman” for screening at the thirty-first international film festival of India currently being held at the Siri Fort in New Delhi, went out of her way to accept the request of Prof.; Sandeep Marwah of spend sometime with the students of the Asian Academy of Film & Television and to have a feel of the film shooting facility at the fast growing Film City of North India. Answering questions from the students she said that she tries to give an identity to the malay cultural ethos and the society through her work. She mentioned that about ten films are being produced annually in Malaysia. Erma Fatima said that Malay movies are more akin to the Asian rather than the western ones and that Indian films are very popular in Malaysia. She said that although Malaya films are devoid of songs and dances, her countrymen enjoy such sequences in the Indian movies. Students were amused to hear her mention that ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Dil-Se’ and ‘Bandit Queen’ are amongst the recent Hindi films she liked very much. She was all praise for the cinematic expressions of Mani Ratnam. Erma Fatima said that after brief acting career, she joined the film school in the neighbouring Indonesia to learn the art & craft of film making and admitted that the knowledge and skill of acting have stood her in good stead while directing films. She mentioned that a creative person should have an unsatiable desire to express himself or herself better and that her best film will always be the “next one”. Concluding the meeting Erma Fatima wished good luck to the students and expressed her desire to shoot a part of her next film in the Noida, Film City and hoped that she will comeback to Marwah Studios and the academy in the near future.
