People of all ages across the world make use of radio and television extensively.

Radio and television broadcasting being instantaneous in nature and pervasive in reach, are very powerful means of, entertaining, informing and educating the masses. The process of conveying the contents of radio and television presentations commonly known as broadcasting, is akin to sowing seeds and we must keep in mind that as we sow so we will reap. There are long term consequences of broadcasting and, therefore, time must be devoted to their study. Radio and television are already established areas of study in the institutions of higher learning in many countries of the world.

Television - a twentieth century invention, is a big success story.

It may be mentioned that a picture is equal to thousand words, moving picture have a magical effect on the human mind and seeing is indeed believing. Television has undoubtedly brought about profound changes in the way we live, do our work and behave with each other. Since the first British telecast in 1936, television has gained maturity worldwide. By now it has a body of knowledge and a history of how that knowledge developed.

Radio broadcasting is a complement of television. Together they form the electronic media. Radio is indeed a low cost but effective medium of mass communication eminently suited to the developing societies. It is most useful to people outdoors; for the visually challenged, it is a boon; it is also an excellent means of relaying classical and orchestral music. Due to its inherent nature, radio unlike television, does not impose alien values on local population very forcefully.

Radio and television as a medium of mass communication has great merits which need to understood. Radio and television studies are important because they are a means of understanding, learning to make use of and controlling these mediums of mass communication. Beside the creative aspects the technical and business aspects of radio and television presentations too have to be understood by the electronic media professionals in the making.

This course will provide the students with appropriate knowledge necessary skills and prepare them for a successful career in the sunshine electronic media industry. Men and women with a graduate degree from a recognized Indian or foreign university and who may be interested in understanding the electronic media and how it is going to the transformed in the twenty first century with a view to providing good radio and television fare to the masses are welcome to enroll in MA in Radio & Television Studies course of Asian School of Media Studies degree granted by Punjab Technical University.
