EDM Explosion: The Rise of Electronic Music & Festival Culture

At an age when not knowing about EDM (Electronic Dance Music) might get you a raised eyebrow, especially among Gen Zs, it is hard to imagine a time when it was not the heartbeat of every music festival, afterparty, or social hub.

The genre started off as an underground movement and has now grown into a global genre with massive cultural influence. As of now, EDM has taken the world by storm, and is a must on the dance floors, movie soundtracks, and even study playlists.

Chapter 1: The Origin of EDM

EDM first emerged in Jamaica through remixing techniques and the usage of studio equipment to manipulate reggae tracks, refining the rhythms, echo, and effects. During the 1970s, people started using synthesizers and drums as an affordable way to create new music, which was quite fresh.

Chapter 2: Rise of the Genre

The advent of MIDI, Musical Instrument Digital Interface, in 1983 and subsequently, synthesizers like the Roland TB-303 and Yamaha DX7 marked a turning point and offered new tones and rhythms that traditional instruments could not, and were then used to create genres like house, techno, and trance.

Later in the 1990s and early 2000s, with the rise of DAWs or Digital Audio Workstations, programs like Cubase, FL Studio, and Ableton Live allowed anyone with a basic computer setup to start producing music right from their home setup.

Chapter 3: The Light of Superstardom

Until the 2010s, EDM mostly held fanbases in clubs, underground raves, and niche communities. But things started to change when artists began mixing electronic sounds with pop-friendly elements, creating a style that was fresh, emotional, and easy to connect with.

David Guetta’s hit When Love Takes Over in 2009, followed by Titanium in 2011, were one of the crucial releases that positioned EDM in the top categories. Around the same time, Calvin Harris produced songs like We Found Love with Rihanna, which stayed at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks.

Chapter 4: EDM in Festivals

By the mid-2010s, EDM had already stepped into pop culture. According to Forbes, EDM was a $7.1 billion industry in 2016, and many music festivals, like Tomorrowland and Ultra, were selling out worldwide. EDM festivals are where the music comes alive, and it has now built a popular fanbase.

Chapter 5: The Global Takeover

In recent years, we have seen a strong rise in EDM across Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Countries like India, South Korea, Brazil, and the UAE have developed their own unique EDM scenes. Local artists are adding traditional instruments, vocals, and rhythms to electronic beats. This has helped create a mix of sounds that feels both fresh and culturally rich.

In Asia, festivals like Sunburn (India) and World DJ Festival (South Korea) are drawing huge crowds. In Latin America, cities like São Paulo and Mexico City have seen a big increase in EDM fans and events. In the Middle East, places like Dubai are hosting international DJs and music conferences focused on electronic music.

Parallely, artists from different parts of the world are working together, blending different styles, like Latin beats, K-pop energy, or Arabic melodies, with EDM. To conclude, this sort of cultural fusion has helped significantly for the genre to reach even more people, thus providing a global identity. And for those inspired by this growth, taking up music production classes or exploring a music academy can be the first step towards starting their journey into the world of sound.

The Digital Revolution and Social Media’s Role

By now, we have seen how EDM has grown around the world, but one thing that has truly changed the game, especially for young creators, is the digital revolution.

Owing to new technology, having just a laptop and software like Ableton or FL Studio has made music production much easier, thus providing opportunities to artists to try out music production without spending a lot in the beginning

At the same time, social media has become a powerful tool for sharing music and building a fan base for new EDM artists. Social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram, if maintained intently, can significantly help boost and build an artist’s online presence and fan base.
