People are making more conscious decisions when it comes to their health and well-being, and rightfully so. The problem of ‘undernutrition and overnutrition’ is prevalent not just in India but the world over, so the requirement for both nutritionists and dietitians is not going anywhere, rather their expertise is required not just at the Individual level but at the national and international levels as well. After all, among the initial goals of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) are: Zero Hunger and Good Health and well-being.

Recently, the Health Ministry announced that we achieved the target of a Maternal mortality rate of 100 deaths per lakh live births. This fate was not achieved, just like that, because of consistent efforts over decades. Indeed, making the medical facility accessible and the institutional deliveries are the heroes, but we cannot ignore our unsung heroes: AASHA workers, who worked to make people aware of the importance of nutrition and a healthy diet.

Feeding people is indeed a deed to humanity but tackling the hidden hunger is also important for both the section of the society that is, those who can afford to have food, and to those who are solely dependent upon the government for a meal a day.

Though in general, we might be using the words Nutritionist and Dietician interchangeably let’s discuss the difference between the two:

Nutritionist: Being a nutritionist does not necessarily require holding a certificate from the institution as it may or may not be regulated in the country. However, nutritionists do pursue a relevant degree, for instance: a B.Sc. in nutrition or any nutrition degree. They can also opt for any certification program as well from any recognized institution.

They mainly focus on general health, wellness, and fitness. They can advise on nutrition, curate diet plans, and work on the community level for public health awareness, but they can not provide medical nutrition therapy.

A Nutritionist in India earns an average salary of ₹3–5 LPA as a fresher, which can increase to ₹6–10 LPA with experience. Top companies hiring nutritionists include Apollo Hospitals, Max Healthcare, VLCC Health Care, HealthifyMe, and Practo.

Dieticians: They are properly regulated by the authorized institution. To become a dietician, you need to register with them. The dietician needs to have a degree, a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, and proper practical training in the form of an internship. Finally, they must pass the Dietitian Registration Exam.

They generally work in healthcare settings like hospitals. Where they treat the Dietary and nutritional problems and manage health problems. e.g.: diabetes, eating disorders, etc by tailoring the diet plan according to the individual’s nutritional requirements.

Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy:

As the name itself suggests a therapy is provided to relieve the physical pain from the body, enhancing the mobility of the body by reducing the pain. It is a core part of the recovery and rehabilitation after an injury or any disability.

Physiotherapists treat every individual after accessing the situation and accordingly tailormade the treatment. Therapists help the patient regain their strength, and they not only focus on immediate recovery but also ensure long-term mobility without any discomfort or injury.

We have seen their effectiveness when any sports event happens, and the player gets injured during the play. The physiotherapist is there to save the day, helping our players from the physical discomfort and us from the mental discomfort.

Chiropractor:

Earlier, it was only a belief, and now it is a manual therapy with practical evidence that the misalignment of the spine can lead to multiple problems. The core philosophy upon which the chiro therapy works is that- ‘the body has the innate ability to heal itself.

Chiropractic requires a proper study with rigorous hands-on experience, though clinical experience mainly focuses on musculoskeletal health, alleviating pain, and helping patients achieve long-term physical wellness. This non-invasive treatment makes people more acceptable of this treatment.

The chiropractor overseas provides post-surgical treatment for the proper functioning of the nervous system, which leads to overall health.

Aesthetician:

Aestheticians also have evolved and deepened their area of expertise from the traditional way of cosmetic treatment to now understanding how to keep our skin healthy. Skin is the largest organ of our body, and yet it’s the most neglected one.

Earlier people used to admire the healthy and glowing skin of celebrities on television and magazine and had little to very little idea that they could also improve their skin. Unawareness led to the use of very harsh chemicals by people, mainly by women, as they came under the set criteria by society to be called beautiful.

Now these days people are getting more informed and aware about the need to keep our skin healthy from the inside out.  They are not bothered by the beauty standards set by society; we are readily embracing ourselves, and to add the boost of confidence we might even take the help of an aesthetician to improve our skin texture and appearance.

The work of aestheticians and dermatologists is different. Dermatologists are medical professionals whereas the Aestheticians are purely cosmetic professionals. Though they might work together in some instances, where the aestheticians are helping the patient in the post-recovery.

Biotechnology:

Biotechnology is one of the sunrise sectors, and like pharmaceuticals, India wants to become a top player in the sector. The government is putting all the efforts through policies by encouraging students to opt for the field and make their precious contributions.

As technology evolves, so does learning and practicing in every field. For instance, Medical Biotechnology also known as Red Biotechnology, primarily focuses on improving health care through drug discoveries, and vaccine development, and the whole world witnessed how through genome sequencing the COVID-19 (Wuhan Virus) vaccines were developed.

The whole world was concerned when this epidemic turned pandemic and in a dilemma as the earlier pandemic years of research and development to come up with an effective vaccine. Biotechnology really played an avenger, saving the world from going into the abysmal.

Biotechnology is transforming the way traditional medicine and the treatment of patients work. It’s driven by constant innovation, research, and development as modern medicine should be. This will help treat patients in an effective way because not only this will help us give a generalized solution for any epidemic but will also help to cater to the personised needs of the patient.

The integration of biotechnology in healthcare will solve the pressing challenges in healthcare. As it grows, it will make health care more accessible, and more affordable, enhancing the quality of life and ultimately making the world a healthy place.
