A diploma in fashion designing is a one-year, skills-focused programme covering fashion illustration, textiles, pattern making, garment construction and CAD. It prepares students to take a design from concept to finished garment and start entry-level roles in the fashion industry.
The diploma runs for one year across two semesters. Semester 1 builds foundations in design principles, textiles, illustration and pattern making. Semester 2 adds fashion marketing, surface ornamentation, advanced pattern making, CAD and a final design project.
Students who have passed 10+2 from a recognised board in any stream can apply. Mathematics isn't mandatory, and no portfolio or prior design background is needed. Eligibility can vary by institute, so confirm the criteria before applying.
The syllabus covers History of Fashion, Textile Studies, Elements and Principles of Design, Fashion Illustration, Pattern Making and Garment Construction, CAD, Fashion Marketing and Merchandising, Surface Ornamentation, and two Design Projects.
Fees vary by institute, facilities and industry exposure. For the current installment-wise fee, scholarships and EMI options at AAFT, refer to the official fee structure page: https://aaft.edu.in/fee-structure
Admission involves registering, attending a personal interview, receiving your result (typically within 72 hours), getting an admission letter, and submitting documents with the first installment to confirm your seat. No entrance exam is needed at the diploma level.
Neither is universally better. A diploma suits students who want faster, practical, lower-commitment training. A B.Sc. (3 years) or B.Des. (4 years) suits those aiming for broader study and senior design or management roles. You can also pursue a degree after the diploma.
Graduates work as fashion designers, fashion illustrators, pattern makers, stylists, fashion coordinators, merchandisers, fashion consultants and textile designers. Many also freelance or start their own label or boutique.
Fresh diploma holders typically start at around ₹2 to ₹3.5 lakh per annum, depending on role, portfolio, city and employer. With experience and specialisation, earnings rise, and entrepreneurs can earn beyond salaried ranges.
Yes, if your goal is practical skills and quick entry into the industry. The one-year format keeps cost and time low, and a strong portfolio matters more than the credential in most design roles. If you want senior or research roles, a degree adds depth.
